How sunscreen works and how to choose broad-spectrum protection

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher. FDA guidance also emphasizes broad-spectrum sunscreen, correct use, and additional protective measures.

Why it matters

The category’s job in a routine

Ultraviolet radiation contributes to sunburn, pigment change, visible photoaging, and skin-cancer risk. Sunscreen is applied to exposed skin to reduce part of that radiation before it produces biological damage; clothing and shade protect without depending on an even topical film.

SPF is derived from a standardized sunburn test and primarily reflects UVB protection. It is not a multiplier for how long a person can remain in sunlight. In the United States, “broad spectrum” means the formula has also passed a specified test for protection across UVA wavelengths.

The labeled result assumes a tested application amount and controlled conditions. Missed areas, too little product, rubbing, sweat, water, and time all change the film on skin. Real-world protection therefore depends on behavior as well as the number printed on the package.

UV filters

Sunscreen actives reduce the ultraviolet energy reaching living skin by absorbing it and, depending on the filter and formulation, scattering or reflecting some radiation. The finished film—not an isolated ingredient—determines tested performance.

Broad-spectrum testing

SPF and broad-spectrum status answer different questions. SPF primarily measures protection from sunburn-producing UVB; broad-spectrum labeling adds a standardized measure of UVA coverage.

Film integrity

Filters must be distributed evenly and remain in place. Application amount, coverage, drying time, water exposure, toweling, friction, and reapplication all influence the protective film after it leaves the laboratory.

How to compare sunscreens

A useful sunscreen combines verified broad-spectrum SPF 30+ labeling with a vehicle you can apply evenly and reapply in the intended setting. The current Drug Facts panel is the authority for active ingredients, directions, warnings, water resistance, and expiration.

    Start with broad-spectrum protection and SPF 30 or higher, consistent with American Academy of Dermatology guidance. Confirm both claims on the current Drug Facts label rather than relying on a product name or an older review.

    Choose water resistance for swimming or sweating, then read whether the tested period is 40 or 80 minutes. Water resistance is time-limited; “waterproof” is not a permitted description of sunscreen performance.

    Match the vehicle to where and how it will be used. Lotion, cream, stick, and spray formats have different directions and coverage risks. Sprays should not be inhaled or applied directly to the face.

    Treat cosmetic elegance as part of adherence. Cast, shine, fragrance, eye comfort, pilling, and compatibility with clothing or makeup can decide whether the tested protection is applied generously and repeatedly in ordinary life.

How to apply and reapply sunscreen

Apply sunscreen to exposed skin before sun exposure and follow the label. FDA consumer guidance specifies applying 15 minutes beforehand and notes that an average adult or child needs about one ounce to cover the exposed face and body from head to toe.

Reapply at least every two hours while exposed and sooner after swimming, sweating, or toweling, following the water-resistance directions. Pay attention to commonly missed sites such as ears, hairline, neck, hands, and tops of feet.

Use sunscreen with shade, protective clothing, a broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sensible timing. No topical product blocks every wavelength or corrects for incomplete coverage, and sunscreen should not be used to extend intentional exposure.

Common questions about sunscreens

Does a higher SPF last longer?

No. SPF is not a measure of time. Reapplication still depends on the label, time outdoors, water, sweat, toweling, and friction.

Are mineral filters inherently more effective?

No. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are often called mineral filters; other approved filters are organic molecules. Either approach can contribute to effective broad-spectrum protection when the finished formula passes testing and is used correctly.

What does water resistant mean?

It means the product maintained its tested SPF for either 40 or 80 minutes during standardized water exposure, as stated on the label. It does not mean waterproof, sweatproof, or all-day protection.

  • Sunscreen is one part of photoprotection, alongside shade, clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
  • Water resistance is time-limited and does not mean waterproof.
  • For infants younger than six months, FDA recommends shade and protective clothing and advises asking a doctor before applying sunscreen.
  • Allergies, photosensitizing medicines, and a history of skin cancer require guidance tailored to the individual.
